The 3 Mistake of my life is the third novel written by Chetan Bhagat. The book was published in May 2008 and had initial print of 200000. The novel follows the story of three friends and is based in the city of Ahmedabad in written India.
This is the third selling novel by Chetan Bhagat making him the best selling English Novelist in India’s history.
After reading this novel it becomes evident that Chetan Bhagat has beautifully narrated the Indian character by giving minutest details of their life styles, food habits, emotions and conservativeness. The story revolves around Indian youths who are ambitious and passionate with same moral, social and religious dilemma.
“Three mistakes of my life” is a story of three friends, doing a business in partnership. Like any Hindi masala movie there are ups and downs in the story. The spice of “love” is also mingled in the story. It reflects the everyday life of the common people of India.
Govind, Ishan and Omi, who are friends leads a hard life. They think of entrepreneurship which leads them to big brand of people accompanied with problems and pressures. The novel also tells us how they react to these problems – few solved by them; few lived with them
Chaten Bhagat chooses his characters from Ahmedabad, city of Gujarat. All of them are from lower middle class family with different area of interest. Ishan is crazy for cricket. Omi is religious and engaged in politics while Govind have inclination towards business. Ishan wants to promote ‘Ali’ another character, who is a talented cricketer. Ishan want to see Ali in Indian team.
Actress of the story is Vidhya, Ishan’s sister. She is bold and beautiful. She falls in love with Govind, who gives her tuition for maths.
The novel clearly depicts how the relationship changes with time. Earthquake of Gujarat, terrorist attack at WTC, Godhra train mishap brings difference between them.
The negative side of politics is also seen. Bitoo, Omi’s uncle tries to employ Hindu youth as fanatics. Situation get worse during Ahmedabad riots Omi sacrifice his life while saving Ali; Ishan comes to know about secret affairs of Govind and Vidhya and reacts furiously to it.
The story has happy ending. After all these problems Govind tries to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills. After consuming pills he informs Chetan Bhagat who along with people take him to hospital where he is saved. Ali is also operated successfully. Govind and Vidhya emerge out to be true lovers.
